The Story
The Village in the Valley.
Between two steep green hills there was a deep valley, so narrow at the bottom that the two hillsides almost touched. Down at the very bottom, where they met, lay a little village.
Every spring the hillsides filled with violets, purple from top to bottom, and the villagers gathered them for their tables. The air was full of their scent, and the bees went vvv, vvv, over the flowers.
One day a traveler came walking over the top of the first hill. He looked down and saw the slope going steeply down, down, down to the village, and then the other slope rising up, up, up again.
"What a very deep valley," he said. He walked down the path among the violets, visited the village, ate a bowl of vegetable soup, and then climbed up the other side.
When he reached the top and looked back, he saw the whole valley at once: two slopes meeting at a point in the bottom. "It is shaped like a V," he said, "a valley of violets."
