Five minutes a day

The Practice Room

Quick, calm rounds of ten. Three strong rounds on three different days and the skill is mastered. Scores are saved for whichever child is practicing.

Our way with drills

Real things first, quick recall second

  • Every skill here is first met with real things: beans, stones, the calendar on the wall, the sky at night. Drill only makes quick what is already understood.
  • Keep it short. One or two rounds, while attention is bright, then stop.
  • A missed answer is not a mistake to fear. Say the right answer together and come back tomorrow.
  • Match the practice to the pathway: letter sounds and days for littles and kindergarten; bonds, adding, and taking away for the early grades; times tables, planets, and roots for the upper grades.
