The Story
The Turtle and the Tall Tree.
In the middle of a sunny meadow stood one tall tree. Its trunk went straight up, and at the very top two long branches stretched out level, one to each side, like arms held wide.
Every afternoon, when the sun grew too hot, a slow old turtle crossed the meadow to rest in its shade. Tap, tap, tap went his feet across the grass, t, t, t.
One day a tired little girl named Tess was walking home from her grandmother's house. The sun was hot and her feet hurt. Then she saw the tall tree with its arms held out wide.
"Come and rest," seemed to say the tree, and Tess sat down in its shade, beside the turtle. The two of them fell asleep together while the leaves whispered, t, t, t, like rain tapping.
When Tess woke, the sun was low and cool, and she skipped all the way home. She drew the tall tree that night: one line straight down and one line straight across the top. "T for tree," she said, "T for turtle, T for Tess."
