The Story
The Salmon's Long Journey.
Far out in the ocean lived a young silver salmon named Jasper. He had grown big and strong in the salt sea, but one day he felt a pull inside, a longing to go home to the little river where he was born.
So Jasper swam and swam, along the coast, into the mouth of the river, upstream past the jagged rocks and the jolly otters.
At last he came to a great waterfall. The water came thundering down, and on the other side of it was home. "I must jump," said Jasper. "J, j, j, jump!"
He swam fast, flicked his tail, and leapt. His body shot straight up out of the water and his tail curled around behind him like a hook. For one moment he hung in the air, shining.
Then splash, he was over, and he swam home to the quiet pool under the birch trees. And the bear who had watched from the bank said, "I have never seen such a jump. It was shaped like a J."
