The Story
The Hammock Between Two Trees.
At the top of a hill grew two tall trees, side by side, the same height exactly. They had grown there so long that their roots held hands under the ground.
One hot summer a hen and her chicks came up the hill, panting in the heat. "Hhh, hhh," they puffed. "If only there were a cool place to rest."
The two trees whispered together, and the farmer's boy, Henry, heard them. He brought a rope hammock and tied it straight across from one trunk to the other, right in the middle.
The hen hopped up, and the chicks hopped up, and the hammock rocked gently between the two trees. "Hhh," breathed the breeze, "hhh," breathed the hen, and soon they were all asleep.
Henry lay in the hammock too, on many summer afternoons after that. Looking up, he saw two tall trees and the bridge between them. "H for hammock," he said, "H for hill and home."
