The Story
The Goose and the Golden Egg.
On a green hill there lived a gray goose who laid one golden egg each spring. She did not sell it and she did not spend it. She kept it warm, because golden eggs hatch into golden goslings.
One day a greedy giant came stomping over the hill. "Give me that egg!" he growled, "g, g, g," in his great gravelly voice.
The goose did not run. She curled her long neck all the way around her nest, and at the end she tucked her head in, firm and flat, like a gate closing at the garden.
The giant could not get past her curved neck, and he could not get past her stern little face. "Go home, giant," said the goose. And off he went, grumbling over the hill.
Soon after, the egg cracked, and out came a gosling as gold as sunshine. The goose curled around him just as she had curled around the egg, and the children of the hill drew them that way ever after.
