The Story
The Drummer of the Village.
Long ago the village had no bell, so a boy named Daniel was given a drum and the task of calling everyone in from the fields at dusk.
His drum was round and deep. He carried it on his hip with the flat skin pressed straight against his side and the round belly of the drum curving out in front.
"D, d, d," went the drum as he walked the lanes. The ducks came waddling, the dogs came running, and the farmers set down their hoes and turned for home.
One evening a great storm came, and the people in the far fields could not see the way home through the rain. Daniel beat his drum harder than ever, d, d, d, d, all through the dark.
Following the sound, every last farmer found the path home. After that, whenever the children drew a drum, they drew it the way Daniel carried it, a straight line and a round belly, and called it D.
