Tell this slowly, touching each element object as it appears:
Once a child walked out at first light and asked the world, What makes everything alive?
The child placed a hand upon the ground. Earth answered, I give you bones to stand, food to grow, and a home beneath your feet. But I am not the whole answer.
The child knelt beside a stream. Water answered, I move through your body, carry life, and return as rain. But I am not the whole answer.
The child warmed cold hands beside a little lantern. Fire answered, I am warmth, courage, hunger, and the bright will to begin. But I am not the whole answer.
A breeze lifted the child's hair. Air answered, I am every breath, every word, every song. But I am not the whole answer.
Then the child became very still.
Earth was in the child's bones. Water moved in the child's blood. Fire warmed the child's body. Air entered and left with every breath.
And beneath every sound was a quiet knowing: I am here. I am alive. I belong to this living world.
The child could not pick up that knowing or pour it into a bowl. Yet it was real.
The four elements whispered together: This is Spirit—the life within, the presence around, and the thread that joins each part to the whole.
The child walked home carrying nothing in either hand, and carrying everything in the heart.
